Richard Xu is the founding partner of Han Yi. Having practiced in several different jurisdictions for almost three decades, Mr. Xu has extensive experience in various practice areas and industrial sectors. His major practice areas include M&A, formation and deployment of private equity funds, project finance and banking, securities offering, restructuring and foreign-related dispute resolution. Mr. Xu has been the primary counsel to numerous leading investment institutions and multinational companies from a broad range of industries and provided full range of legal services from deal structuring, legal document drafting to deal closing for their various cross-border M&A, joint venture and financing projects, privatization transactions and other financing initiatives related to China. He is also a frequent and routine counsel to many leading institutional investors with China investment portfolios or targets. Mr. Xu has been actively involved in structuring and establishing onshore and offshore China-focused private equity funds for both foreign and domestic fund sponsors and investors for over a decade, and has represented many well-known institutional investors and industrial investors in various private equity investments and M&A transactions. In addition, Mr. Xu has maintained an active dispute resolution practice by providing practical and effective solutions to complicated equity and commercial disputes mainly for foreign clients doing business in China. He has also advised issuers as well as underwriters in several high-profile overseas IPOs involving Chinese companies or operations. Prior to founding Han Yi, Mr. Xu practiced with the Hong Kong and New York offices of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP and O'Melveny & Myers LLP as a New York lawyer for many years and with two leading PRC law firms as a PRC lawyer for several years.

Mr. Xu is educated and trained as both a PRC and a New York lawyer and has science, law and MBA degrees from Nanjing University, Peking University, the University of Georgia and Georgetown University. He currently sits on Georgetown University’s Asian Law Alumni Advisory Board. Mr. Xu is fluent in English and Chinese. He has been continuously ranked by Chambers & Partners as a Band 1 lawyer in private equity – China buyout area for more than a decade.
